Morotai island is the place that my father comes from, he was born and raised there. Today is April 25th is the ANZAC day and somehow I hope this event can be held again continually in Balikpapan as well as a several years ago.

Some friends and I explored Balikpapan and found lots of evidence of the Japanese occupation- including the tunnels (near Pasir Ridge), the concrete fortifications at Manggar and lots of the Marsden matting used to land planes. In 1995 we invited, through the Aust. War Memorial in Canberra, a host of Aussie soldiers and their Japanese opponents, to come together in a ceremony at the Gen. Managers house on Pasir Ridge ( John Ellice-Flint, an Australian whose dad had fought with the 6th Div. in New Guinea was G.M. then). It was quite refreshing to see these two distinct groups come together to embrace with such distinct memories. Pasir Ridge was called Paramatta Ridge in the official maps of the time.

my sister and I will be visiting Balikpapan for Anzac Day 2019, in memory of our Dad Bill Abbott, he often told us stories of his time in Balikpapan.

Thanks, Stuart. It was indeed a moving, interesting and enjoyable event. My father would have been pleased (and probably amused) that his son followed him to Balikpapan – 73 years later! Thanks to all who organised everything so professionally, and made the occasion so successful.
